This time of year many of us go on vacation to escape the winter weather. It is important that, in addition to enjoyment, we plan for safe and healthy travel as well. Here are some important things to consider before bidding bon voyage:
✓ Seek pre-travel health advice from a Registered Nurse and physician specific to your destination including vaccinations information at least 4-6 weeks before you leave.
✓ Consider and attend to your health: Are you too sick to travel? Do you have a condition that will need attention while you are away?
✓ Pack smart to ensure you have all necessary travel documentation including medical notes for prescriptions.
✓ Pack a travel health kit to include sunscreen, antibacterial hand gel, water purification tablets, etc.
✓ Plan ahead for illness, injury and other medical issues by purchasing travel insurance, learning the signs of common destination illnesses and knowing where the closest medical centre is.
✓ Use insect repellent containing 30-50% DEET or pre-treated with Permethrin and wear long sleeved shirts and pants when outside at dusk and dawn in areas with malaria.
✓ Choose a sunscreen that is SPF 15 or greater including both UVA and UVB protection.
✓ Be cautious with food and water. In some countries you should only drink bottled water and make special considerations about the food you choose to eat.
✓ Wear protective gear when participating in local adventure sports. Stay informed on water trends if planning on swimming in natural water.
✓ Know the local traffic and pedestrians laws – accidents are more common than you think!
