We are excited to now offer the Good Life with OsteoArthritis: Denmark (GLA:D™ Canada) virtually. The GLA:D™ Program is an evidence-based exercise program to help patients manage their osteoarthritis (OA) through education sessions and specifically tailored exercises for hip and knee OA. Our Calgary and Edmonton Centres were offering this program in person prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, however we are now excited to offer the program virtually to patients across Alberta and BC.
Good Life with OsteoArthritis in Denmark (GLA:D®) was developed in Denmark and later brought to Canada after its success. GLA:D™ is an education and neuromuscular exercise program designed for individuals with hip or knee OA. Individuals with early to late stage OA can participate.
The program at Copeman Healthcare will now be offered virtually by certified GLA:D™ Canada trainers. It is made up of three virtual education sessions and 12, one hour virtual exercise sessions. The focus of the education sessions is to help individuals better understand OA.
Education components include:
- What exactly OA is, along with risk factors and symptoms
- Current available treatment for OA
- How to self-manage your symptoms
- Why and how exercise can help with your OA
- Nutrition and OA
- How to cope with the difficulties of daily activities associated with OA
The exercise sessions are focused on developing muscular strength through functional exercises, movement and posture control and application to daily activities.
The goals and outcomes of the program are to:
- Reduce pain
- Improve function
- Improve quality of life
What have the program results shown?
The GLA:D® program results have been very positive with an over 30% increase in pain reduction, self-reported physical activity levels, reduced use of joint related pain killers and reduced number of individuals on sick leave, all at one year post-program.
Who can participate?
In order to participate in the virtual GLA:D™ Canada program at our clinic, you can either be referred by a clinician (ex. physician, physiotherapist) OR, you can self-refer. A virtual intake assessment will be completed by one of our GLA:D™ Canada certified Kinesiologists to ensure this program is right for you. In addition, you will need to have a computer, tablet or phone that contains a web camera as well as audio functions.
In addition, we will provide the therabands (elastic bands) that you will need to complete the exercises. These will be available for contactless curbside pickup at all of our locations (Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, North Vancouver).
