Dr. Rod Elford is a family physician at the Copeman Healthcare Centre in Calgary.
His practice is focused on preventive health, chronic disease management and treating patients with unusual or complex health issues. He is passionate about helping individuals move toward a state of optimal health and wellbeing. He believes in a holistic approach to healing (e.g. mind, body, spirit, social and environment) and is open to complementary and alternative therapies for which there is supportive evidence. His other clinical interests include sports medicine and minor surgery “lumps and bumps”.
Dr. Elford has a broad and deep understanding of the health care system in Alberta, with more than 20 years as a clinician and having held a number of medical leadership positions in province. Currently, he works at the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) as a Medical Director. Prior to that he was Provincial Medical Director – Clinical Care Knowledge and Integration, at Alberta Health Services (AHS). Preceding that he was Medical Director for Health Link Alberta. In 2016, he completed the AHS Executive Education Program.
Dr. Elford’s undergraduate degree is in Physical Education (Honours) from the University of Calgary where he graduated with the gold medal. He completed his medical degree at the University of Alberta in 1993. During summer breaks he attended the International Space University and received a diploma in Space Sciences, with an emphasis on countermeasures to long-term space flight. Dr. Elford completed Family Medicine at the University of Calgary in 1995, and was recognized as the exemplary graduating family medicine resident in the country. The Alberta Heritage Foundation then sponsored him to complete a two-year international Clinical Research Fellowship in Telemedicine (i.e. Newfoundland, Norway and USA), and a Master’s of Science in Community Medicine. Since 1997, he has worked as a family physician, urgent care physician, telehealth consultant and medical director/advisor for numerous organizations. In 2009 he was awarded and maintains the designation as “Fellow” of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, given to family physicians who annually complete a higher level of continuing medical education. Dr. Elford has given dozens of presentations at medical conferences, and has authored numerous articles in peer reviewed medical journals and two medical books.
