Family Physician & Consulting Emergency Physician
Dr. David Smith is a family physician and consulting emergency physician at the Copeman Healthcare Centre in Vancouver.
Dr. Smith has a diverse medical background that includes family medicine, remote and rural emergency medicine and trauma and military operations medicine. He completed his Medical Degree at the University of Cape Town in 2009 and subsequently completed a Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine/Trauma Residency in Johannesburg, South Africa.
After immigrating to Canada in 2013, Dr. Smith worked as a rural family physician and emergency physician in Alberta for approximately 4 years before relocating to Vancouver. He is currently a clinical instructor and associate professor with the University of British Columbia’s Department of Family Practice, with similar roles in the Family Medicine Residency Programs at the University of Northern British Columbia, Island Medical Program and the University of Calgary.
Dr. Smith’s clinical practice includes Executive Medicine/Locum tenens work at the Copeman Healthcare Centre and Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine (ICU) at various hospitals in British Columbia including Vancouver General Hospital and St Paul’s Hospital. He will complete a Fellowship in Emergency Department Point of Care Ultrasound at Vancouver General Hospital in 2020-2021 affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Department of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Smith enjoys a healthy and active lifestyle and strives to incorporate positivity into his medical practice. He enjoys time out on the mountains and beaches of British Columbia with his family when he is not at the clinic or hospital.
