Stroke & Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Brain injuries, whether the result of a traumatic injury or acquired through a disease process, can range from mild to severe. They can interfere with the way you think, behave and function, leaving you unable to perform basic tasks and affecting memory, concentration, and communication. For some, recovery can take weeks or months. For others, it is a lifelong process.

At the Copeman Healthcare Centre we work hard to help patients maximize their skills and independence. They benefit from a highly specialized program that is tailored to the unique cognitive impairments and physical problems of the individual as well as emotional or behavioral difficulties. Our goal-directed, team-based approach helps brain injury patients to:

  • Develop new cognitive, behavioural and physical strategies to compensate for deficits
  • Recover from physical problems to help them reach their maximum potential
  • Overcome the psychological and social problems that often interfere with adjustment
  • Ease adjustment to changes in function and increase coping skills
  • Enhance the skills needed to perform daily activities

Treatment begins with a full Neuropsychological Evaluation to establish therapeutic target areas. This is supplemented with assessments from other professionals as required, including:

  • Neuropsychologists
  • Neuro-physiotherapists
  • Speech Language Pathologists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Family Doctors
  • Registered Dietitians

Once assessment and feedback is complete, goals are established and cognitive remediation begins alongside specialized physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and other counseling or medical attention as required. Reintegration into family, vocational and communal roles is the final step in the rehabilitation process. As a critical component of the rehabilitation process, involvement of family members is promoted through regular family meetings.

Patients are referred by neurologists, family physicians, pediatricians, mental health professionals, rehabilitation specialists, educational specialists and institutional representatives. Self-referrals and parent referrals are also accepted.

The cost of a stroke or brain Injury rehabilitation program can only be determined following the appropriate assessments, but it is determined based on the hourly or sessional fees for each professional service, and then discounted to respect the commitment to the ongoing treatment that will bring the patient to his or her full potential.
