Dietitian and Nutrition Programs
Proper nutrition is an essential component of maintaining optimal health, preventing disease and managing chronic conditions.
Medical research has consistently shown that the incidence and severity of chronic illnesses rises in lockstep with poor nutrition and inactivity. Happily, it is well documented that the reverse is also true, that consuming proper nutrients and staying active can offer dramatic health benefits.
A Registered Dietitian will explore options with you and help make choices that work within your lifestyle and do not sacrifice flavour or the enjoyment of food.
How does proper nutrition impact wellness?
Much of our physical, mental & cognitive output derives from the fuels we choose and how they are metabolized, used or stored in our bodies. Minor changes to the types and quantities of proteins, carbohydrates and fats we consume can often drive dramatic results in the way we feel, our energy levels and our tolerance for exercise.
Building resilience in body, mind and brain requires that we maximize the delicate interplay between the foods we eat, our activity levels and the extent to which we exercise our brain.
How is a Registered Dietitian integrated into my care team?
A Registered Dietitian at Copeman Healthcare has a broad scope of practice that serves many clinical functions. For example, a patient treated by a Copeman physician for Type II diabetes will also work with their Registered Dietitian to identify low-glycemic foods to help regulate blood sugar. A patient with hyperlipidemia or high blood pressure will work with a Registered Dietitian to identify foods that will help manage their LDL cholesterol.
After careful consideration of your immediate needs or your longer-term goals, a Registered Dietitian will help map out a nutritional plan that is right for you.
The Registered Dietitians at Copeman Healthcare offer a personalized approach to lifestyle management. Services are offered either as part of a broader program or on a fee-for-service basis.
LifePlus clients enjoy an annual review with their dietitian, a personal nutrition plan, support in setting and achieving health goals and ongoing follow-up.
Clients enrolled in the Comprehensive Health Assessments will meet with a Registered Dietitian as part of their annual prevention screen. Hourly rates are also available. Please visit our fee schedule for more details.
How can I benefit from the services of a Registered Dietitian?
All of the Dietitians at Copeman Healthcare are registered either by the College of Dietitians of British Columbia or the College of Dietitians of Alberta. They are highly qualified healthcare professionals who can translate the science of nutrition into everyday meal plans.
A Registered Dietitian will work with you to improve your general health, prevent disease, and treat or manage acute or chronic conditions. They will help you navigate the many food myths and diet fads to ensure you make choices that are healthy, appealing and satisfying.
- Nutritional assessment & health optimization
A comprehensive nutrition assessment evaluates your meal balance, frequency, and intake of fibre, salt, fats, vitamins, minerals and overall calories. The assessment also examines the relationship between your intake and the nutrients found in your blood (e.g. vitamin D, vitamin B12, glucose, cholesterol and others). Based on your results your Registered Dietitian will help you set achievable goals and longer-term plans for disease prevention.
- Weight loss or maintaining a healthy target weight
Successful weight loss programs are not fads or short term commitments but practical lifestyle modifications that results in lasting change. At Copeman Healthcare, your Registered Dietitians will explore realistic options with you, set achievable goals and provide ongoing support. Services are delivered in one-on-one or group counselling settings. If you are a LifePlus Client, why not try the “Kickstart” meal plan to get you started or receive on-going support through the Smart Weight Program.
- Diabetes management
For patients with diabetes our Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) can help ensure the healthy balance between food, activity and medications to optimize glucose management. On-going monitoring of blood work, lifestyle and stress management are also components of Copeman Healthcare’s Diabetes Management Program.
- Allergies and food intolerance
If you have allergies or food intolerances, a Registered Dietitian will review your current diet and make recommendations based on the symptoms you are experiencing. Food elimination/challenge trials are typically the standard for pinpointing food intolerances and can often lead to meal planning that offers a dramatic improvement in the quality of a patient’s life. Registered Dietitians will offer expertise and support for these trials that can be challenging to navigate on your own.
- Sports performance
Nutrition can provide the energy and hydration needed to help you train harder and maximize your performance. A Registered Dietitian will evaluate your current intake against your body’s requirement for fluid, calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat and other nutrients. This evaluation includes pre- and post- training meals or snacks and provides careful suggestions for any modifications that may be needed.
